Pow-Wow Flashback...

Awesome!!!

Simply the word to describe Central District Pow-Wow 2006...!!! For me personally, this was one of the really good RR camps that I've been to. And I've been to many...this camp had it all! Rain to shine, hikings up hills and mini mountains, wildlife, fun games, great activities, loads of fun and laughter, wonderful night supper cooking sessions, powerful night rallies and so much more! Allow me to share with you and recap what happened in the camp in this 4 part series as I share with you the adventure of Pow-Wow 2006! Enjoy the pics and stories...

Day 1: 23rd August 2006

The silence of the morning was shattered with the sound of eagerly anticipating and thrill-seeking rangers gathering in church at around 8.30am...even after telling the rangers over and over again not to overpack and bring oversized bags, no one seemed to heed the advice. Everyone seemed to carry at least 2 bags each plus their sleeping bags! After asking around, most rangers said that one bag was for food supply! Haha...awesome! Loads of food and supper to feed an entire kampung! By the looks on their faces, everyone was geared up for a great time together for the next 4 days. From the young to the not-so-young (there wasn't any really old fellas with us), everyone shared the same passion...the love of the outdoors and adventure! And what a camp its going to be...

Once we got everyone and everything loaded up, it was time to begin our journey. We left church at around 9.30am and reached the beautiful Dusun Eco Resort at around 11.30am. Those in the van were fortunate enough to have a pit stop at McDonalds Janda Baik to refuel, reload, and for some...to make some deposits! :) Lots of transactions happened that morning! Those in the bus had to take a pretty long walk to the campsite as the bus couldn't drive in all the way to the campsite. Most of the rangers waited at the 'bus stop' area and they had lorries and pick-up trucks to ferry them and their luggages to the campsite. Even this turned out to be quite a ride for some of the rangers! Just the start we needed...

Charlie's Angels...first time sitting bus...

Waiting for our rides at the 'bus stop'

What a happy bunch of Discovery rangers..."Look mama, no hands!"

Once we got our luggage and bags to the campsite, and after registration...it was time to set up tents and settle down. Those staying in tents had a fun time climbing up Mountain Eco Resort to reach to their campsite. With all their bags, food, plus their own weight...it was quite a climb, I can imagine. But once we got up there, it was perfect. The weather was superb, the air was fresh, the silence was gone...The serenity of the place was slowly fading away with the arrival of more and more campers, as they began to fill the entire campsite! Hahaa...the whole campsite was swarming with rangers by lunchtime! What a sight...

Campers having their briefing session...

After a quick lunch and some drama at the campsite, we all headed to the Dewan for camp briefing. It was nice seeing rangers from all over selangor and KL gathering together, breaking ice, getting to know one another, just having fun. After introducing the Camp Staff and the Group Leaders, the rangers then gathered in their respective groups for a short time of briefing. The groups are Italy, Brazil, Holland and England. From Sel #6, our Red Bull-powered Cmdr Zhi Fung was the leader of Samba Kings Brazil, while Spaghetti Queen Cmdr Laura was asst. leader for world champs Italy! Right from the start, we could see the rivalry between these nations, as they took turns to churn out their country songs and yells, hitting out at each other whenever possible. The atmosphere was simply electrifying! Italy was twisting and turning all spaghetti and pasta-like...England were simply themselves, being Hooligans...Brazil were doing the colourful Samba shake...and Holland were being all fruity and nice in Orange!

Camp highlights had lots of great activities offered to campers this time around. The activities included rock climbing, obstacle course, jungle trekking, flying fox, rakit building, and FCF village. Just s highlights was about to begin, the weather decided to be a lil naughty with us..and it started to rain...at this point, the highlights had to be postponed until the rain stopped. We decided to continue the hightlights in the morning the following day. Once the rain stopped, we had the first ever Pow-Wow Kung Pao! Every ranger had loads of fun playing some whacky, sticky, masking tape game...where you had to stick whatever thrash you can find on your face using masking tape! It was loads of fun seeing the rangers dive into the pile of rubbish, trying to stick the most precious junk onto their heads. Our die-hard ranger Amy Tan had quite a fun time removing the sticky tape which ended up sticking to most of her hair on her head! Haha...what a sight...this challenge was won by the Orange Kings Holland! Must be their big heads, I reckon...

England Hooligans with their new headgear - to pick rubbish!

Tsk...tsk...look what kids these days are in to now...sampah picking! With their heads summore! :D

Next challenge was the Pow-Wow HandBall challenge! Each team sent in their best handball players to battle for the pride of their nations. All the matches were superb. It was intense, competitive, played with passion, yellow and red cards were flying, nation flags being hoisted and waved in the air, the fans cheering on the players...at the end of the day, there can only be one winner. The overall winner were none other than the reigning world champs, Italy! The spaghetti boys and pasta girls managed to twist and turn their way out of stick corners and emerged champions in all their matches! Even the leaders and commanders decided to have a go at the champs. After much taunting and jeering, the leaders decided to be humble and hand over the win to Italy, not wanting to spoil their party mood....yea right!!! The results of the day are as following:

Italy vs England : 3 - 1
Brazil vs Holland : 4 - 0

Italy vs All-Stars Commanders : 2 - 1
Brazil vs All-Stars Commanders : 1 - 1

After an awesome time of day games, everyone shook hands with each other, exchanged jerseys, players greeted one another, fans continued to cheer on, all is good. Some notable highlights of the tournament was the sight of seeing the Brazil flag bearer running around the court, referee chasing him, flag bearer slips and falls, gets up, referee gives him a 'red card', and he's off! Cmdr Zhi Fung also was the first player to be sent off for 2 receiving 2 yellow cards. One for foul play, and the other for man-handling the referee! Lastly, was the sound of the fans cheering 'Referee Kayu, referee kayu!' Haha...all in all, it was a fun day.

The Holland handball players! Can you spot Cheryl and Amy Joy?? (posers...hehe)

"Apa referee kayu referee kayu! You...out!!!"

After washing up and having our community dinner together, the rangers then gathered in their groups for group discussion, to practice their songs and yells. Then the Adventure and E-Rangers headed off for their 'Fancy Sarung Night' campfire, while the Discovery Rangers went for their Tutty Fruity Campfire, all dressed up as fruits! Everyone had a great time of laughter, enjoying the hilarious skits and stunts, submarine game, songs, and camp stories. The sight of a campfire, stars in the sky, the sound of the forest...all this added to a superb campfire night. Enjoy the pics..

The walk to the campfire was awesome...looked like a scene from 'Survivor'!

After a wonderful and tiring day, it was finally time to call it a night. As the rangers headed back to their tents, everyone was glad to be here at the camp as they knew that more great times were to come in the following days...as some headed straight into their sleeping bags, the other 99% decided to prolong the fun. Suddenly, the 'chef spirit' within us just took over and everyone was busy dishing out their best dish of the night. For the leaders, the menu included Maggi, Indo Mee telur mata kerbau, burger patty, BKT (yea!!), crabmeat and tanghun soup, sausages, etc etc...true Malaysians...tell me how to lose weight???

We're glad we're here!

Well folks, that's all for Day 1...stay tuned for Day 2 highlights! God bless...

Quote of the Day:

Ranger: Cmdr, what is flying fox?

Cmdr: Well, its an activity where you will hold the body of a fox which has wings, give it a hard smack on its backside, and it will fly off from your hands to a target you aim at...

Ranger: Wow, sounds fun...how hard must I smack its backside?

Cmdr: As hard as you can....:)
